Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction
The electrical circuit controlling the wastegate solenoid is not behaving as expected.
Severity EXPERT Moderate — diagnose before it gets worse
Driveability EXPERT Drive with caution — the ECU is already protecting itself
Tuning EXPERT Do not tune a car storing this — fix it first
Check first — in this order
The order is the product. A list of "possible causes" is what every parts site publishes, and it is why people replace parts blindly.
- Treat this as a circuit fault, because that is what it is. Measure solenoid resistance, supply and ground, and check the connector before anything mechanical is touched. EXPERT
- Check the harness for chafing and the connector for corrosion — this code lives in the wiring far more often than in the solenoid. EXPERT
- Check the vacuum or pressure lines to and from the solenoid for correct routing, and only then consider the solenoid itself. EXPERT
What this code does not license you to replace
- That the wastegate has failed. A circuit fault is not a mechanical diagnosis, and confusing the two sends people to buy a turbo.
- That the solenoid is dead. The circuit includes the wiring and the connector, which fail more often.
- That the turbocharger is involved at all.
