P0234

Turbocharger / Supercharger Overboost

The engine produced more boost than the ECU allowed, so it cut back to protect itself.

Severity EXPERT High — protection is already cutting in
Driveability EXPERT Drive with caution — the ECU is already protecting itself
Tuning EXPERT Do not tune a car storing this — fix it first

What it looks like in the data

A fault code tells you a threshold was crossed. The shape of the requested-vs-actual boost is what narrows the cause — a sharp spike then a cut is a different fault from a slow shortfall.

Illustrative Requested vs actual boost · not a measurement from any vehicle
0.0 0.4 0.8 1.2 1.6 0s1s2s3s4s5s bar Requested Actual

Example shape: actual climbs past the 1.40 bar target and the ECU cuts it back to protect the engine.

Check first — in this order

The order is the product. A list of "possible causes" is what every parts site publishes, and it is why people replace parts blindly. Steps marked by architecture belong to one boost design and are noise on the other.

  1. Log actual against target through the overboost event. A sharp spike followed by a cut is a different fault from a slow climb past target, and the shape decides everything that follows. EXPERT
  2. Read what the boost control was commanding while it happened. An actuator obeying a wrong command is a different problem from one ignoring a correct command. EXPERT
  3. Wastegated (petrol) Then the mechanism: whether the wastegate can actually open — a seized actuator or a flapper bound with carbon. EXPERT
  4. Variable-geometry (diesel) Then the mechanism: on a variable-geometry diesel there is no wastegate, and excess boost points at vanes stuck toward the closed position. EXPERT
  5. Check sensor plausibility before accepting the reading. An overboost that only exists in the data is a measurement problem, not a boost problem. EXPERT
  6. Inspect boost-control solenoid plumbing for swapped or split lines. EXPERT
  7. On a modified car, check for an aftermarket boost controller or a stiffer actuator spring before condemning anything factory. EXPERT

What this code does not license you to replace

  • That the wastegate is stuck. This code reports boost above a permitted threshold, not a named component failure.
  • That overboost is harmless because the car feels fast. The cut is protection.
  • That the reading is true before the sensor has been checked for plausibility.

Engines we cover that log this

No workshop sign-off yet. The diagnostic order on this page has had a technical review of the knowledge model, performed by a model — not a manufacturer certification and not a mechanical inspection of any vehicle. No tuner has yet put their name to this ordering. Treat it as a reasoned starting point, confirm with measurement, and get a professional to sign off before you condemn a part.
