P0172
System Too Rich (Bank 1)
The fuelling control has hit its rich-correction limit on bank 1 — it has been pulling fuel out to compensate for something and has run out of adjustment. It is a mixture threshold, not a reading from one sensor.
Check first — in this order
The order is the product. A list of "possible causes" is what every parts site publishes, and it is why people replace parts blindly.
- Compare short and long fuel trims at idle against trims under load. A rich error everywhere points somewhere different from one that only appears at light load. EXPERT
- Check fuel pressure — a regulator or pump adding more pressure than commanded puts extra fuel in that nobody asked for. EXPERT
- Check the airflow signal for under-reading. A MAF reading low makes the ECU calculate too little air and over-fuel against it. EXPERT
- Check for a leaking injector, and for fuel in the oil or a saturated evaporative purge adding uncommanded fuel. EXPERT
What this code does not license you to replace
- That the oxygen sensor is at fault. It is usually reporting the mixture accurately.
- That it is simply the opposite of P0171 and therefore the same parts in reverse.
