P0087

Fuel Rail / System Pressure Too Low

Actual fuel pressure fell below what the ECU commanded. On a modern direct-injection engine this is a request-vs-actual pressure problem, and where it falls away decides everything.

Severity EXPERT High — protection is already cutting in
Driveability EXPERT Drive with caution — the ECU is already protecting itself
Tuning EXPERT Do not tune a car storing this — fix it first A tune that asks for more fuel cannot fix a system that is already short of pressure; it makes the shortfall bite sooner.

Check first — in this order

The order is the product. A list of "possible causes" is what every parts site publishes, and it is why people replace parts blindly.

  1. Log commanded against actual rail pressure through a load event. A shortfall only at high demand is a different fault from one present at idle. EXPERT
  2. Check the low-pressure supply (lift pump and its feed) before the high-pressure pump. A starved high-pressure pump reports exactly this code while being healthy. EXPERT
  3. Check the fuel filter and lines for restriction. EXPERT
  4. Only then the high-pressure pump and the pressure-control valve / regulator. EXPERT

What this code does not license you to replace

  • That the high-pressure pump has failed. Low supply pressure feeding it produces the same code.
  • That the injectors are the cause of a system-pressure fault.
