P0011
Camshaft Position — Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
The variable valve timing on bank 1 is further advanced than the ECU commanded, or will not return. VVT runs on oil pressure, so this is an oil story far more often than a hardware one.
Check first — in this order
The order is the product. A list of "possible causes" is what every parts site publishes, and it is why people replace parts blindly.
- Check oil level and condition first. The overwhelming majority of these are a low level, the wrong grade, or an overdue change — not a failed part. EXPERT
- Read commanded against actual cam angle. A solenoid obeying a wrong command is a different fault from a mechanism that cannot move. EXPERT
- Check the oil-control valve (VVT solenoid) for sticking and its filter screen for debris. EXPERT
- Only then the cam phaser / actuator itself. EXPERT
What this code does not license you to replace
- That the phaser has failed. Dirty oil, a low level, or a stuck oil-control valve produce this far more often.
- That it is a timing-chain fault without evidence from the cam-angle data.
